Australian readers have spoken, and their favourite book is Cloudstreet. Tim Winton’s 1991 novel came first in ABC Radio National’s Top 100 Australian Books countdown, ABC News reports, after more than 280,000 votes were counted.

Set largely in a big, rambling house in post-war Perth, Cloudstreet follows two working-class families who end up living under the same roof over two decades. It has never been out of print and has been adapted for radio, the stage, opera and television.

It was a strong showing for Winton overall, with three more of his novels making the list: Breath at number 33, Dirt Music at 41 and Juice at 88. The countdown celebrated the breadth of Australian writing, and the result shows how deeply one story about family, grief and belonging has stayed with readers for more than three decades.
