Bristol becomes the first UK city to ban fast-fashion adverts

Council-owned bus stops and screens will no longer carry ads for fast fashion, Black Friday sales, flights, SUVs or fossil fuel firms.

Bristol has become the first city in the UK to ban adverts for fast fashion from its council-owned advertising spaces, the BBC reports.

Councillors voted by eight to one for a new policy covering all bus stops in the city and some free-standing screens in the centre. It rules out fast-fashion campaigns built on mass markdowns, flash sales, limited-time drops and Black Friday deals, alongside adverts for flights, cruises, SUVs and other non-electric cars, and fossil fuel companies.

The council says the aim is to cut people’s exposure to high-carbon products and encourage more climate-friendly choices. Sheffield and Edinburgh already restrict some car and travel advertising, but Bristol is the first to take on fast fashion, one of the most wasteful industries on the planet. Other councils are watching closely.
