Twelve young designers in Burundi have staged a fashion show using clothes made from rubbish, Africanews reports. The collections, made from plastic waste and discarded mosquito nets, went on show at the Kamenge Youth Centre in northern Bujumbura in an event called the Kamenge Drop.

The designers spent ten days training with designer and artist Manuela Minka during Green Diplomacy Week. They learned to see waste as raw material and to turn it into wearable pieces with their own style.

Beyond cleaner streets, the young people see a living in it. Participant Arsène Irakoze told Africanews that work made from these materials can earn money. For a city where plastic waste builds up quickly, it is a creative way of turning a problem into skills, income and something to celebrate.
