Wind and solar generated more electricity than fossil fuels across the European Union in 2025, a first for the bloc, Euronews reports. Figures from the energy think tank Ember show the two sources supplied 30% of EU power, just ahead of fossil fuels at 29%.
Solar did much of the heavy lifting. Its output grew by more than 20% for the fourth year running, reaching 369 terawatt-hours. Ember’s Beatrice Petrovich said the milestone shows how quickly the EU is moving towards a power system built on wind and sun.
Only 14 of the 27 member states crossed the line individually, and upgrading Europe’s ageing grids to carry more clean power remains a major task. But the direction is clear: homegrown renewables now outpace imported fuels in powering Europe’s homes and industry.
