Kenya’s Eliud Kipchoge has won the Melbourne Marathon in a new race record, Africanews reports. The 41-year-old, a two-time Olympic champion and former world record holder, crossed the line in 2:09:10, two seconds inside the previous best set by his compatriot Timothy Kiplagat Ronoh in 2022.

Kipchoge made his move in the final 10 kilometres and pulled clear of the field. The race finishes with half a lap inside the Melbourne Cricket Ground, where he eased off to wave to the crowd, a gesture that may have cost him a few seconds.

It was his first marathon win since Berlin in September 2023. Australia’s Thomas Do Canto finished second in 2:10:35, while New Zealand’s Camille French won the women’s race in 2:28:25.
