Loganair has flown an all-electric aircraft between Glasgow and Dundee, marking the start of the UK’s first electric flight demonstrations, STV News reports. The flights use the ALIA CTOL aircraft built by BETA Technologies.

Over a two-week programme the plane is carrying freight, mail and medical supplies across parts of Loganair’s network, including routes flown for Royal Mail. The aim is to test how battery-powered aircraft could serve the short hops that link Scotland’s islands and remote communities.

Chief executive Luke Farajallah called it a landmark day for European aviation and for Scotland. Short regional routes are seen as the most realistic early use for electric planes, and Loganair’s network is full of them.
