New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art has announced Rembrandt and the Ancients, its first major show devoted to the Dutch master in two decades, Smithsonian Magazine reports. It will explore how Rembrandt drew on Greek and Roman myth and history and turned those stories into deeply human pictures.
More than 125 works will be on display, including about 70 of Rembrandt’s paintings, prints and drawings, hung alongside ancient and Renaissance objects of the kind he collected and studied. Loans will include The Abduction of Ganymede from Dresden and Bathsheba Holding King David’s Letter from the Louvre, shown with the Met’s own Aristotle with a Bust of Homer.
The exhibition is being organised with the Louvre. It opens at the Met on 7 November 2027 and runs until 6 February 2028, before moving to Paris in spring 2028.
