At a school pep rally in Mahanoy City, Pennsylvania, Keny Cedanio Ramirez had only just been announced as homecoming king when he noticed his classmate Axton Kuhl, who has Down syndrome, becoming emotional and starting to cry, 6abc reports.

Keny walked over and handed Axton the crown and sash, making him Mahanoy Area’s homecoming king. Video of the moment has since spread widely online.

Keny said he had been happy about winning for a few seconds before he saw his friend. His own younger brother has autism, he explained, and he would hope someone would do the same for him. He credited his mother with teaching him those values, and said that even without the title he had a better homecoming than he expected. “I just did what any friend would have done,” he said.
