A rediscovered letter confirms Unamuno and H. G. Wells went to the cinema together

Ninety years on, a note from the Spanish writer to his children settles what happened after dinner with the author of The War of the Worlds.

It sounds like the start of a literary joke: a Spanish philosopher and an English science-fiction pioneer walk into a cinema. But it really happened, and a letter has now turned up to prove it.

Euronews reports that an unpublished letter from Miguel de Unamuno to his children has been found in the archive of the Casa-Museo Unamuno at the University of Salamanca. Dated 2 March 1936, it describes an evening in London a few days earlier, when H. G. Wells invited him to dinner and then to the Leicester Square Theatre.

The film on the bill was Things to Come, the futuristic epic for which Wells himself had written the script. “Wells took me to see his film,” Unamuno told his family.

Wells’s handwritten invitation for the evening of 28 February had already surfaced in 2025, and the newly found letter completes the picture of the two writers’ night out. Both documents can be seen in an exhibition in Bilbao, Unamuno’s birthplace, which runs until 30 October.
