Around ten dolphins were seen west of the Harbour Bridge, a rare sighting that scientists say reflects a healthy harbour.

Early-morning kayakers on Sydney Harbour had a surprise when a pod of around ten dolphins swam past them west of the Harbour Bridge, ABC News reports.

Dolphins are usually seen in the wider eastern parts of the harbour, closer to the ocean. This group was spotted near Birchgrove heading towards Cockatoo Island and the Parramatta River, with a second kayak group seeing them off Blues Point. Tour operator Tim Griffiths said he had never met a dolphin on that side of the bridge.

Marine scientist Dr Vanessa Pirotta of Macquarie University said sightings like this point to a healthy marine environment and rich local biodiversity. She runs a citizen science project logging wildlife in the harbour, and says the animals may be returning visitors that drop in on Sydney from time to time.
